Division I alumni football update
Posted: November 21st, 2011 | Author: Drew Schmenner | Filed under: Prep SportsDontrell Onuoha, a San Diego State redshirt freshman defensive end and former La Quinta High School standout, made his first career start for the Aztecs on Saturday because starter J.J. Autele was injured. Onuoha recorded two tackles in the 52-35 loss to Boise State, but he injured his back in the game, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Here’s how other former high school players from the area performed for their respective Division I schools last weekend.
FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISION
Alex Germany, San Jose State (Palm Desert): The senior backup safety didn’t play in a 27-24 victory over Navy.
Cody Romness, USC (Palm Desert): The junior walk-on safety didn’t play in a 38-35 victory over Oregon.
D.J. Welch, Oregon State (Palm Desert): The freshman linebacker had two tackles on special teams in a 38-21 victory over Washington.
Trent Wilder, UNLV (Palm Springs and College of the Desert): The redshirt junior defensive tackle had one tackle in a 45-17 loss to Air Force.
Other former high school players on FBS teams include San Diego State freshman walk-on safety Desmond Dukes (La Quinta), Colorado State freshman linebacker Nuuvali Faapito (La Quinta), USC freshman walk-on offensive lineman Erick Jepsen (La Quinta) and USC redshirt freshman walk-on quarterback Anthony Neyer (Xavier Prep).
FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SUBDIVISION
Shawn Elrod, Nicholls State (La Quinta and College of the Desert): The senior linebacker had four tackles in a 31-14 loss to Southeastern Louisiana.
Steve Dunstan, UC Davis (Palm Desert): The junior wide receiver didn’t play in a 23-19 victory over Sacramento State.
Thomas DeMarco, Old Dominion (Palm Desert and College of the Desert): The senior quarterback and the Monarchs were idle, but they are hosting Norfolk State in the first round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday.
Brandon Vandenburg, San Diego (Xavier Prep): The freshman tight end didn’t play in a 23-14 victory over Jacksonville.
Other former prep players on FCS teams include Sacramento State redshirt freshman offensive lineman Lars Hanson (Palm Desert).
