Rating the Desert Valley League’s football season
Posted: November 22nd, 2011 | Author: Drew Schmenner | Filed under: Prep SportsWith only one high school football team from the Desert Valley League advancing to the second round of the CIF playoffs, how does this season stack up against years past?
Since Palm Springs is still alive, that judgment is still up in the air, but here are some historical facts:
- After Indio advanced to the Division V championship game in 1992, no DVL team advanced past the second round of playoffs for five years.
- In 1998, the DVL started to be more competitive in the playoffs. That year, La Quinta lost to Temescal Canyon in the Division VIII semifinals. Only twice since then — in 2003 and 2008 — has the DVL failed to have a team advance to the semifinals.
- The only time that the DVL had a single team win in the first round was in 2001 when La Quinta won its second CIF Division VIII title.
We’ll see how far Palm Springs advances this year, but they have looked good so far, shutting out Rialto 35-0 in the first round.
