Football: Desert alumni college football update

Here’s how former high school players from the desert performed for their respective college teams over the weekend.

FOOTBALL BOWL SUBDIVISON

Nu’uvali Fa’apito, Colorado State, La Quinta: The backup redshirt freshman linebacker had four tackles in a 29-22 loss to Utah State on Saturday.

Greg Latta, Purdue, College of the Desert/Palm Desert: The backup junior defensive end didn’t play this weekend because the Boilermakers were idle. He was recently featured in the Indianapolis Star, my hometown paper.

Dontrell Onuoha, San Diego State, La Quinta: The starting sophomore defensive end had one tackle in a 38-34 loss to San Jose State on Saturday.

D.J. Welch, Oregon State, Palm Desert: The starting sophomore linebacker had five tackles in a 27-20 victory over UCLA. You can read more about Welch and the Beavers in Wednesday’s print edition of The Desert Sun.

Trent Wilder, UNLV, College of the Desert/Palm Springs: The backup senior defensive tackle had two tackles and a pass breakup in a 38-35 victory over Air Force on Saturday.

Other former high school players who are on FBS teams include BYU freshman cornerback Trevor Bateman (Palm Desert), USC freshman left guard Erick Jepsen (La Quinta), Utah State defensive lineman Tryn Mesarch (Palm Desert), Boise State freshman wide receiver Taylor Pope (La Quinta) and Colorado State freshman wide receiver Jordan White (Palm Springs).

FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SUBDIVISION

Lars Hanson, Sacramento State, Palm Desert: The redshirt freshman right tackle did not play in a 35-13 loss to North Dakota on Saturday.

Other former high school players who are on FCS teams include UC Davis freshman offensive lineman Armando Ceja-Lua (Xavier Prep), Missouri State sophomore wide receiver Adam Judnich (College of the Desert/La Quinta) and Harvard freshman cornerback Tola Omilana (Xavier Prep).

DIVISION II

Mo Barragan, Western New Mexico, College of the Desert/Palm Springs: The backup sophomore offensive lineman played in a 42-34 victory over Fort Lewis College.

DIVISION III

David Adams, Simpson College, Cathedral City: The senior defensive tackle started and led the team with seven tackles, including one-and-a-half sacks, in a 54-0 victory over Eureka on Saturday.

Kevin Gilbert, Greenville College, Indio: The senior nose tackle had three tackles in a 49-24 victory over Minnesota-Morris on Saturday.

Anthony Osuna, Greenville College, Desert Hot Springs: The senior outside linebacker did not play in a 49-24 victory over Minnesota-Morris on Saturday.

David Rafter, Lake Forest University, Palm Desert: The backup freshman wide receiver caught one pass for 12 yards in a 34-13 victory over Knox on Saturday.

Charles Scicli, Whittier College, San Jose State/Palm Desert: The starting senior linebacker had six tackles in a 55-24 victory over Puget Sound on Saturday.

Josh Sonico, University of Puget Sound, Cathedral City: The freshman kicker made two extra points in a 55-24 loss to Whittier on Saturday.

Other former high school players on Division III teams include John Carroll University sophomore running back Domonic De La Riva (Xavier Prep) and Whittier freshman defensive back Antonio Desmarais (Desert Hot Springs).

NAIA

Mike Karls, Midland University, Palm Springs: The junior backup quarterback completed 2 of 6 passes for 6 yards rushed for 5 yards on six carries in a 42-0 loss to Morningside College on Saturday.

Other former high school players on NAIA teams include St. Francis (Ill.) sophomore running back Ryan Greer (Desert Hot Springs).
