The late Mike Gates, a former teacher and coach at Palm Springs and La Quinta high schools who died of cancer in January 2011, will be remembered when the two teams play each other in the second annual Mike Gates Memorial Game at Palm Springs on Friday. Money will be raised for a scholarship fund for Gates’ three children — Madison, Jack and Henry. Fans can place donations in jars at the snack bar, and T-shirts will be available for $7. The shirts also are available at La Quinta High School. All proceeds from T-shirt sales will go to the scholarship fund.
Anyone who would like to donate money to the fund also may send a check made out to the Mike Gates Scholarship Fund to either Palm Springs athletic director Chris Calderwood (Palm Springs High School, 2401 E. Baristo Rd., Palm Springs, CA 92262) or La Quinta athletic director Dan Armstrong (La Quinta High School, 79255 Blackhawk Way, La Quinta, CA 92253).
Gates started his teaching career in the desert at Palm Springs before moving to La Quinta, where he taught U.S. history, coached tennis and ardently supported the football team.
